Alligator kills Florida burglary suspect hiding from cops.

The 11-foot-long alligator was so ferocious it had to be euthanized by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission trapper as Riggins’ corpse was being recovered, according to Florida Today.A suspected burglar hid from pursuing police officers on the edge of Barefoot Bay in Brevard County, Florida, and was taken by the over three metres-long ‘gator.

Brevard County deputies were called to the locality on Nov. 13 after receiving reports of two men hiding behind homes, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Matthew Riggins, 22, of the nearby city of Palm Bay, called his girlfriend and told her he had broken into homes and was being chased by officers who had dogs but had found somewhere safe to hid. “He probably went into the lake to hide from the officers and the dog, and came across that ‘gator,” Major Tod Goodyear of Brevard County Sheriff’s Office told Bay News 9. Investigators say that Riggins had told his girlfriend he would be in Barefoot Bay to commit burglaries with another suspect who is now in custody but not cooperating with officials, according to Maj. Ten days later, Riggins’ body was found in the lake. “When the body was found, it had injuries that were consistent with an alligator attack,” Goodyear said. “We had trappers euthanize the gator and when we opened it up, there were some remains inside that were consistent with injuries found on the body.” Riggins died from drowning and bites were discovered along his legs and body that led investigators to determine he had been dragged underwater by the massive animal. Goodyear said that burglaries reported by snowbirds returning to their homes for the winter are being investigated in connection with Riggins and his unknown accomplice.
