3 dead in fiery Pa. crash after car hits truck carrying herbicide.

Police and firefighters gather at the accident scene on Torresdale Avenue near Rhawn Street, Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia. PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Three people were killed in a fiery crash overnight when a car slammed into a tractor-trailer that was parked illegally in Northeast Philadelphia.

There was nothing I could have done,” the man said, holding back tears. “I just want the families to know, of whoever these victims are, this close to Christmas, that I tried. Firefighters put out the blaze and found three people, all believed to be women, dead inside the car. “It was powder form,” he said, “and their own concern was that as they were extinguishing the fire some of the powder may have run off down the gutter, and they were containing that.” There was no initial word on whether alcohol was involved in the crash, but investigators said the tractor-trailers were parked illegally.

The Philadelphia Fire Department said its hazmat team responded to the crash site due to reports of pesticides in one of two tractor-trailers that caught fire after the car hit the first tractor-trailer. A Comcast spokeswoman confirmed Sunday that the fire from the triple fatal accident in Holmesburg overnight severed Comcast fiber optical lines causing an outage in an area near the accident. She said Comcast does not have an exact number for how many customers lost service, only that the accident “took a number of our customers out of service.” Some customers had service restored by 4 p.m.
