LSU’s Les Miles pays tribute to a fallen police officer.

— The man accused of gunning down a Louisiana state trooper who stopped to offer him roadside assistance spent much of the past two decades in and out of prison, including a stint for setting his mother’s house on fire.

Daigle, who is also accused of shooting and killing Trooper Steven Vincent, is reported to have lived with Brewer and was driving Brewer’s truck at the time of the shooting. Detectives believe the same shotgun was used in both homicides, however, the shotgun will be processed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for further testing.

Kevin Daigle’s criminal history, provided to The Associated Press by law enforcement officials across two parishes in southwest Louisiana, was lengthy. “Kevin was a good person until he started drinking. It was a scene that probably would have made most people run the other way: a bloodied state police trooper lying on the asphalt by the side of a Louisiana country road, the lights from his police cruiser still flashing as a man with a shotgun stood nearby. Before that, he’d served nearly two years in prison from 2012 to 2014 for a felony arson conviction and parole revocation for a third offense DWI, according to the state corrections department.

Daigle “led investigators to believe an altercation occurred between him and Brewer which led to Brewer’s death,” the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
