9 People Hurt In Southern California Apartment Fire.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (AP) — Southern California authorities say a 3-year-old boy has died after being severely injured in a fire that tore through a condominium without working smoke alarms. Eight other people were hospitalized due to the fire, including Liborio’s mother and brother, who remain in grave condition, according to authorities. The boy, who was identified as Jaiden Liborio, passed away around 11:45 p.m. at Children’s Hospital in Mission Viejo, according to the Orange County Coroner’s office.

Authorities believe the fire, which spread to two condos and displaced 80 people, was most likely caused by a juvenile playing with a lighter in the living room of one of the units. Several people trapped by the flames jumped from a second story window before firefighters arrived, including a woman who had “carefully” tossed her 2-year-old and 3-year-old daughters, as well as a 5-year-old boy, down to neighbors who were waiting below, according to Concialdi. Another woman, who is in her late 40s, described as a grandmother, suffered a serious leg injury when she jumped from the burning building and missed the mattress, Concialdi said.
