Bill Cosby’s honorary degrees from Fordham, Marquette universities revoked.

In wake of the many sexual assault accusations against Bill Cosby, two universities — Fordham University and Marquette University — have rescinded the honorary degrees awarded to the comedian in 2001. “As a Jesuit university, Fordham could no longer stand behind the degree it had bestowed upon Mr. MILWAUKEE—Marquette University announced Thursday it is rescinding an honorary degree it awarded to comedian and father figure Bill Cosby when he was commencement speaker for the Class of 2013, amid compounding allegations the actor was a serial rapist who drugged his victims.Bill Cosby is seeking to keep private his scheduled questioning under oath in a case involving accusations that he sexually assaulted a young woman when she was 15. Cosby drew great applause when he donned a Marquette cap and revealed an MU sweatshirt under his graduation garb during the May 2013 commencement at a nearly packed BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The university cited Cosby’s words in a recently released 2005 deposition, in which the 78-year-old admitted to giving women quaaludes before sex, which Cosby claimed was consensual. “By his own admission, Mr. He told graduates to go into the world remembering the values they learned from the school’s Jesuits: respect, integrity, and a responsibility to serve others. The university presented the Cos with an honorary doctor of fine arts degree in 2001 for “the significant role he played in breaking the color barrier in American television and popular culture, and his position as an inspirational figure for millions of African Americans.” But that started to change in 2005, after a woman named Andrea Constand sued Cosby for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting her. Similarly, Marquette University retracted the degree given to Cosby in 2013 on Thursday, which also marks the first revocation of its kind for the college. “Every day, we live these values by challenging our students to integrate knowledge and faith into their real-life decisions in ways that will shape their lives,” the Jesuit university said in a statement.

The college’s President Michael Lovell tweeted, “I’m proud of our trustees and Marquette leadership for taking this important stand.” Lowell said he received overwhelming support from campus leaders and faculty members for the board’s decision. Asked about the timing of the action, Marquette spokesman Brian Dorrington said the Board of Trustees met for the first time this academic year on Thursday. Equally appalling is his longtime strategy of denigrating the reputations of women who accused him of such actions,” the school’s statement said. “That Mr. Cosby was willing to drug and rape women for his sexual gratification, and further damage those same women’s reputations and careers to obscure his guilt, hurt not only his victims, but all women, and is beyond the pale.” He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Kennedy Center Honor, Twain Prize, and a Bob Hope Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Huth’s legal team filed an opposition to the Cosby team’s motion in Los Angeles County Superior Court to keep the deposition public, according to her lawyer, Gloria Allred. “They filed a motion for a protective order, and we filed our opposition because we oppose their motion and we don’t think it is appropriate,” Ms. Last year, the Navy stripped Cosby’s title of honorary chief petty officer, and more recently Cosby lost a Disney statue and a mural in North Philadelphia.
