A 22-year-old Bronx woman faces a second-degree murder charge and three manslaughter charges after she allegedly fatally stabbed a pregnant woman to death in her home on Friday, New York City police said. Vernon Geberth, a retired NYPD detective lieutenant commander who has extensively researched “fetal kidnapping,” told The Post that Wade’s alleged efforts to fake a pregnancy echoed every other instance he had seen of the shocking crime. “The primary motivation is to sustain a relationship with a male partner by providing them with a child,” he said. “Most of the offenders have convinced family members that they are pregnant. The family suffered unfathomable horror Friday when Ashleigh Wade, went berserk and stabbed Angelikque, who was eight-and-a-half months pregnant, according to police. Ashleigh Wade is charged with second-degree murder, three counts of manslaughter and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said in a statement to PEOPLE Sunday.

The New York Daily News reports that Angelikque Sutton was found in Ashleigh Wade’s apartment with a “deep gash” in her stomach and stab wounds to her neck and torso; the baby’s placenta was recovered from the bathroom floor. She had previously told family she had a baby who died shortly after being born in 2014, but police had uncovered no evidence she’d ever been pregnant. Councilman Andy King described the community as “saddened” and “distraught” following the attack in a neighborhood that is peaceful and family-oriented, he tells PEOPLE. These include posts made to Facebook by Angel Praylow, who presents himself as being the father of Wade’s child and wrote on Nov. 16, “Today her due day but she not ready to come out yet.”
