Authorities: Spirit Airlines flight returns to Florida airport after possible threat.

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) – A security scare forced a Spirit Airlines flight to make an emergency landing at Ft. Fort Lauderdale officials say a person on board the flight made the threat, according to local CBS 12. “No apparent threat” has been detected, and no bomb was found aboard the aircraft. The Charleston County Aviation Authority announced the expansion Thursday, the same day the New York-based airline launched nonstop service between Charleston worldwide Airport and Fort Lauderdale in south Florida.

The airplane landed in “a secure area” around 11:05 p.m. where Fire Rescue was standing by, according to tweets from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles. In a statement to the South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1XdXb9l ), the airline said the flight returned to the gate after about 15 minutes in the air “because of a security issue on board.” Concepcion says the passengers disembarked the plane while it was swept for explosives. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the plane landed safely and was taken to a secure area to be checked out by the bomb squad, but no actual threat was detected.

This interruption in the flight’s departure came after a witness reported alleged “suspicious activity” to the flight crew, according to Maryland Transportation Authority police. It has been said that there were a total of 92 passengers onboard this A320 aircraft and one of the passenger had hinted of a bomb explosion threat for the mid flight aircraft. The next day, the Council on American Islamic Relations asked Spirit Airlines to apologize for removing the four, saying the suspicious activity that led to the passengers’ removal “was a man who appears to be of Middle Eastern descent watching a news clip on his cell phone.”

Spirit Airlines is an American low-priced global and domestic carrier with headquarters in Miramar, Florida, close to the Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood Airport.
