Authorities: Man Found Dead Following Standoff Died From Self Inflicted Gunshot Wound.

BUCKS COUNTY, P.A., (CBS) — An autopsy has been completed on the man who was found shot dead inside a Bucks County motel room yesterday, following a barricade situation that lasted several hours.PHILADELPHIA — A North Carolina man suspected in a Southern crime spree that included a double slaying is dead after a warrant for a hitchhiker he and his girlfriend picked up led police to the motel where they were holed up in suburban Philadelphia. — North Carolina authorities are investigating whether accomplices may have helped a Carolinas crime spree suspect who later killed himself in a Pennsylvania motel room. Davidson County Sheriff David Grice said Monday detectives were told two other people were with 34-year-old Lloyd Wayne Franklin near a Thomasville, North Carolina, house hours before 82-year-old Davie Lee McSwain and his 78-year-old wife Joan were slain inside.

After the standoff at the Knights Inn in Bensalem, Lanning was arrested along with James Miller, who is the hitch-hiker the murder suspects picked up along their way to Pennsylvania from North Carolina. After he fled with a gun stolen from the home, police said, he picked up Lanning and the two stole prescription painkillers during pharmacy robberies in Aberdeen and Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Georgetown, South Carolina, before apparently heading north. Fred Harran, public safety director for Bensalem, Pennsylvania, said that along the way the couple picked up a hitchhiker who turned out to be wanted for a parole violation for an auto theft conviction.
