Another hit for Cosby: Fordham University rescinds Cosby’s honorary degree.

NEW YORK — Fordham and Marquette universities on Thursday rescinded Bill Cosby’s honorary degrees amid allegations from women accusing the comedian of sexual assault. McShane, S.J., which had gone out to the Fordham community, said that the university’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted on a motion to revoke Cosby’s 2001 honorary doctor of fine arts. The statements, comments, or opinions expressed through the use of New Vision Online are those of their respective authors, who are solely responsible for them, and do not necessarily represent the views held by the staff and management of New Vision Online. It’s the first time the university took such steps in its history. “The University has taken this extraordinary step in light of Mr Cosby’s now-public court depositions that confirm many of the allegations made against him,” a representative for the university said in a statement. “A recipient’s actions would have to be both unambiguously dishonourable and have a deep impact.

Marquette President Michael Lovell and Provost Daniel Myers issued a letter to the university community after the vote that said, “By his own admission, Mr. The actor and comedian had delivered the 2001 commencement speech to students at Fordham College at Rose Hill, the oldest and largest of the New York-based university’s 10 colleges. Following his surprising confession, his lawyers denied all the allegations as saying that he “misunderstood the question.” Despite more than 40 women accusing him of drugging and sexual assault, Cosby has not been charged with any crime. Equally appalling is his longtime strategy of denigrating the reputations of women who accused him of such actions.” Several schools have given Cosby honorary degrees over the years, including Oberlin College, Boston University and the College of William and Mary.

Halleran, according to the article, said it would be “very messy.” In July, Spelman College ended a Cosby professorship, despite the fact that Bill Cosby and his wife Camile donated some $20 million to Spelman College in the ’80s, according to ajc.com. In February 2015, eight members of university faculty founded Fordham Against Torture (FAT),which created a petition calling the university to revoke former CIA chief John Brennan’s honorary degree.
