1 Dead, Many Injured In Prospect Heights 5-Alarm Fire.

Three people suffered critical injuries and two NYPD officers suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to a hospital, CBS2’s Valerie Castro reported.The Fire Department says they received a call about a fire at 267 Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Heights at 3:28 a.m., with the blaze on the first and second floors.

BROOKLYN (PIX11)– Firefighters are battling a five-alarm blaze in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn that killed at least one person and injured multiple others Wednesday morning. The FDNY called it a 2-alarm fire at 3:34 a.m.; then it became a 3-alarm fire at 3:53; at 4-alarm fire at 4:07; and a 5-alarm fire—for relief purposes—at 6:42 a.m. Firefighters, who were on the scene in two minutes, chased the flames to a deep seated area in the rear of the building.” The Daily News reports that the victim who died was a local business owner: Bassan Awad leapt from the fourth floor when “flames blocked his only route of escape, forcing him to jump out a top-floor window.” Awad owned a deli down the street; his sister-in-law said, “He tried to get out from the fire escape; the flames were too big.” Flatbush Hardware is co-owned by brother Desmond and Christopher Nation, whose father started the store after moving from Jamaica.
