Hill Democrats seek spotlight to curb terror suspects’ guns.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats took to the floors of the Senate and House on Tuesday to draw attention to their drive to prevent suspected violent extremists from obtaining guns, an issue they believe has gained potency from last week’s shooting massacre in California. The move has no chance of succeeding, given united GOP opposition, but it offers Democrats a chance to highlight Republican opposition to gun control legislation that would stop people on the terrorist watch list from buying firearms.HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) — Pennsylvania’s five month-plus budget impasse remains firmly in place now that the state House and Senate have passed different versions of a spending plan. The Senate Monday passed a budget bill that represents the framework of a deal negotiated by Republican legislative leaders and the Democratic governor.

Senate Democrats made a doomed-from-the-start push to get unanimous consent to revisit the legislation, only to be blocked by Republicans for the second time in less than a week. “The vote last week showed that the gun lobby unfortunately still has a staggering stranglehold on this process,” Sen. After lawmakers vote on changes to a visa-waiver program on Tuesday, the House will adjourn. “We’re going to keep it going for as long as we can,” said New York Rep. The framework yes, the details, no.” But House Minority Leader Frank Dermody, an Allegheny County Democrat, said a vote for the budget measure, numbered House Bill 1460, would set the process back. John Cornyn, a member of GOP leadership, warned the bill would allow the government to deny “some of your core constitutional rights” without having to show proof that you’re a terrorists, and argued that too many innocents are on the no fly list.

But Murphy called that “nonsense” — and pointed out the Democratic legislation gave people a new avenue to get off the no-fly list if they’re on there mistakenly. “It is absolute insanity that this isn’t already a restriction we have in place. House Republicans said they would bring in another $309 million this year and $627 million next year to pay for their budget through taxes on cigarette and tobacco products and on online gambling. “I don’t have to remind anyone in this chamber that it’s the second week of December,” he said. “Now is the time to pass a balanced budget that meets the needs of all Pennsylvanians.” ”Why are we wasting time today debating this new plan when we should be considering the agreed-to spending plan?” said Rep.

Given what happened in San Bernardino it is extra insanity that we’re not going to move on this, that we haven’t moved on this already,” the Democrat from New York said. House Democrats were reduced to holding a sham hearing to try to build pressure for action on gun control Tuesday, which they then followed up with a series of failed procedural attempts to force House Republicans on the record on the bill. He offered his own plan giving the government 72 hours to delay gun sales to those suspected of terror acts and convince a judge to block that sale, and letting the government immediately arrest the suspect. Cornyn said Democrats were trying to “capitalize” on last week’s California shootings “to justify this unconstitutional attempt to deny American citizens their core constitutional rights,” such as gun ownership.

Republicans said the budget must hold the line on spending and be accompanied by legislation to reduce the state’s investment risk from retirement plans for state and public school workers. Republicans have reacted to the San Bernardino killings by emphasizing national security, pushing legislation stiffening restrictions on refugees and travel to the U.S.
