Mistake led to Chism crime scene ‘slaughterhouse’ being cleaned.

Teacher Colleen Ritzer was leaving her Danvers High School classroom on Oct. 22, 2013, when a freshman told her she made math fun and she could not wait to return to class. The kudos were offered by Autumn Ciani, who testified Thursday in Essex Superior Court about her final conversation with Ritzer, during the murder and rape trial of Philip D. The suspect, who was 14 at the time, peeks out to see if anyone is watching, goes back into the classroom, and comes back out with his hood on to mask his face.

In the footage, taken on October 22, 2013, Ms Ritzer is shown leaving her classroom at the school, about 35 kilometres north of Boston, and walking towards the bathroom. The eerie video shows Ritzer walking into the bathroom, and Chism walking in after, as he puts on a pair of gloves before he allegedly raped and murdered her. They say he raped her, put her body in a rolling recycling bin and dumped it in the woods outside the school. “The defense is trying to show there are a lot of loose ends here”. Kelley King, a forensic scientist with the Massachusetts State Police, described on the stand how investigators searched the woods around 3 a.m. on October 23, 2013, hours after anyone had last seen the 24-year-old Ritzer.

On Tuesday, his trial ended early when he told Regan he was “about to explode.” Regan told the Salem Superior Court judge that he was shaking, twitching and mumbling and “doesn’t want to hurt anyone.” Defense lawyers told the court that Chism’s grandmother and aunt both have severe mental illnesses and have been repeatedly hospitalised for similar symptoms. In video clips played for jurors Wednesday, Chism was captured on surveillance cameras following Ritzer into the restroom wearing a hood and donning what look like gloves. King said Ritzer’s neck wounds were so severe that they exposed her “internal structure.” She identified bloody clothing, a backpack, and tree branch found near Ritzer’s body with blood on the tip.

Defense attorney Denise Regan said in her opening statement that it was that conversation between Ritzer and Chism about his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee that made the teenager increasingly stressed. Vinicio Pimentel, the Spanish-speaking supervisor for a private crew that cleaned Danvers High, testified he informed a custodian of blood in a girls’ restroom.
