Cop Who Shot Corey Jones Wasn’t Qualified For Undercover.

On October 18, Jones was fatally shot during a confrontation with Nouman Raja, a Palm Beach Gardens officer who pulled up alongside Jones’ broken-down vehicle in an unmarked van, without his police badge. The Rev Al Sharpton was expected to deliver the eulogy on Saturday at the funeral of Florida musician Corey Jones, who was shot dead by a plainclothes police officer earlier this month.2:30 p.m. update: The brother of Corey Jones told mourners Saturday that he is certain the fatal confrontation could have been avoided if the officer had identified himself clearly. “If this officer wouldve just said I’m the police, even if he didn’t have a badge, CoreyJones wouldve just laid down on the ground,” C.J. Jones’ death, the latest in a string of fatal incidents involving police and black men, has sparked calls for greater transparency after the local sheriff’s office released few details following the shooting.

The way in which Raja identified himself to Jones is one aspect of the investigation into the shooting now being performed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. A confrontation ensued and Raja, who is of South Asian descent, fired six shots, hitting the 31-year-old Jones three times, according to the state attorney’s office. On the night of the incident, Jones was driving home after playing with his band when his vehicle broke down near a highway exit ramp in Boynton Beach around 3:15 a.m. reported WPBF. Jones was a drummer and a band known as the Future Presidentz and was on his way home from a gig in Juptier when the shooting took place. “I hope we’ll see his name is the history books, not just the headlines,” said Bo Simeonov, the frontman for Jones’ band, the Future Presidentz. Melissa Jones said that Corey needed the gun for protection because he carried expensive drum equipment and was often out at late hours playing music gigs.

He has since been placed on administrative leave with pay. “We take this investigation very seriously and as such, we cannot afford to rush, cut corners or appear to be partial,” Aronberg said in an emailed statement.
