Boston hospital shooting leaves one critically injured.

BOSTON—A surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital was shot twice and critically injured while at work Tuesday, triggering an immediate lockdown at one of the nation’s most prominent medical centers, authorities said.

A doctor was left with “life-threatening” injuries after a suspect fired two bullets into him this morning on the cardiovascular floor of Brigham & Women’s Hospital, according to Boston police. “I think the doctor came out to see him and that is when the altercation took place,” Boston police Commissioner William Evans said. “It’s leading us to believe that something in the past upset this guy.” A call came in at 11:04 a.m. for shots fired at the hospital, and a detail officer nearby was on the scene in seconds, Evans said. The State Police said in a tweet they were assisting Boston police at a “reported shooting.” A State Police spokesman said Boston police would be the investigating agency. One person was critically injured in a shooting Tuesday at a hospital in Boston, police say, adding a suspect has been arrested ©Ronald Martinez (Getty/AFP/File)

Officers found the alleged suspect — a 6 foot man wearing glasses and a blue sweater — inside an exam room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Evans said. Irene Stefanidis, of Boxford, was with her father, who was getting a CAT scan on the lower second level when an announcement came over the hospital loudspeakers warning of a “life threatening emergency on the second floor.” “They brought people down to our floor as a precaution,” she said, adding that about 45 minutes passed before she was allowed to leave the building.
