Donna Shalala, President of Clinton Foundation, Has Stroke.

NEW YORK — Donna Shalala, a former cabinet secretary under President Bill Clinton and president and CEO of the Clinton Foundation, has suffered a stroke. Shalala accepted a position as president of the non-profit earlier this year after leaving UM where she worked for more than a decade as the schools first female president.

Shalala, 74, fell ill after departing the closing events around the Clinton Global Initiative, which was held at the Sheraton New York hotel on Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, according to a statement from foundation officials. It has pledged to review and refile some annual tax returns after reports it failed to disclose millions of dollars in donations from foreign governments while she was secretary of state. Shalala, a close friend to both Clintons, served as secretary of health and human services in the Clinton administration and unlike other cabinet members, was known for her ability to confront and be direct with the former president.
