Explosion and fire destroys house in Taunton.

A gas explosion destroyed a house in Taunton Sunday afternoon, leaving the structure “fully collapsed within a few minutes” after firefighters arrived, local fire officials said. A Taunton woman escaped with her life late Sunday afternoon after an explosion and resulting fire destroyed her suburban house, our news partners at the Taunton Gazette reported.

The state fire marshal’s office, State Police, and local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, Coan said, though he confirmed that gas was involved in the blast. Saltalmacchia said he, along with his son and a friend, comforted the distraught woman, bringing her a pair of sandals to protect her feet and giving her water. “I ran outside,” he said, “and flames were streaming out the window. Don Dinunno, spokesman for Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, would only say that a gas leak or a few other type of related malfunction “is a possibility”.
