2 judges won’t marry anyone after Supreme Court decision.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — At least two judges in southern Missouri have opted to not marry any couples, gay or straight, following the U.S. WASHINGTON — Same-sex married couples can now receive Social Security and veterans benefits for spouses in all 50 states, as the federal government implements the Supreme Court ruling that allowed gay couples to marry nationwide.“Thanks to [Justice Department staff’s] leadership and the quick work of the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs, today I am proud to announce that the critical programs for veterans and elderly and disabled Americans, which previously could not give effect to the marriages of couples living in states that did not recognize those marriages, will now provide federal recognition for all marriages nationwide,” Lynch said in a statement. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize marriages between same-sex couples, which overturned the state’s 2004 voter-approved constitutional ban. “In light of the divisive impact of the recent United States Supreme Court decision on our society relative to the issue of marriage, we elect to not allow the integrity and respect of your local court to be tarnished by being caught up in the dissention created,” the statement read. The federal marriage benefits for which same-sex couples are now eligible include Social Security benefits, veterans benefits and Supplemental Security Income.

Louis County municipal court and chairs the marriage committee of an association of local judges, said he’s heard of “a handful” of judges who plan not to conduct marriages. Both agencies said Thursday they are still working to implement the ruling. “With this terrific statement from the attorney general, the devil is in the details,” Henry said. “Marriage benefits are available to same-sex couples nationwide, and that’s as it should be.
