FCA recalls 900,000 SUVs for air bag, electrical issues.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will recall about 600,000 SUVs and crossovers to fix possible problems related to air-bag deployment and anti-lock braking systems. TOKYO (AP) — International stock markets wavered today on renewed expectations for a Fed rate hike this year but are ending October with strong gains after snapping back from a volatile third quarter. Chrysler said none of its vehicles in the recall was equipped with airbags from Takata Corp., which has been at the center of a major recall after being linked to eight deaths and several injuries. The recall involving the airbag problem affects 351,989 units of the 2003 Jeep Liberty and 2004Jeep Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicles, including 284,089 in the U.S.

Honda said side airbags in 2008-09 model Accords could deploy if the ignition is on and a door is slammed or there is a “significant impact” to the lower portion of the body. Technicians must replace the occupant restraint control (ORC) module and impact sensors, which have malfunctioned and caused airbags to deploy when they should not have. The Commerce Department will report on personal income and spending for September and the Labor Department will release the third-quarter employment cost index. Some vehicles also may require new front- and/or side-impact sensors to accommodate software compatibility.” The company hasn’t set a repair schedule and it is unaware of any crashes linked to the issue.

The company recently agreed to pay up to $105 million in penalties to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for failing to report and fix defects efficiently. The decision came despite fresh evidence that the Bank of Japan is making little headway in its unprecedented effort to spur inflation in the world’s third largest economy. Separately, FCA US LLC said Friday it is voluntarily recalling nearly 542,000 2012-2015 Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont SUVs — including 275,614 in the United States to address electrical issues. Data for September showed the core inflation rate, which excludes volatile food prices, was minus 0.1 percent while household incomes and spending also fell.

A company investigation of warranty repairs discovered electrical components on certain older-model vehicles may be subject to moisture buildup that may impact Anti-Lock Brake System modules.
