First Ladies Reveal Baby Panda Cub Name.

WASHINGTON, DC – SEPTEMBER 14: In this handout from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, a giant panda cub is seen at Smithsonian’s National Zoo September 14, 2015 in Washington, DC. Zoo Director Dennis Kelly said before a ceremony that “it’s a very exciting day because it celebrates more than four decades of research and success on the giant panda, and to have it recognized by the two first ladies is an honor.” The name was chosen by the two first ladies from a list of suggestions by officials at the zoo and in China. As VIPs waited for the ceremony to begin, Bao Bao, the zoo’s 2-year-old panda cub, came into the panda yard and dismantled a pagoda-shaped panda cake. Also present at the event were new Smithsonian Secretary David Skorton and students from the Yu Ying Chinese immersion public charter school in Washington, who performed for the first ladies. The current pair of adult pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, came to the zoo in 2000. (TM and Copyright 2015 CBS Radio Inc. and its relevant subsidiaries.
