Gunfire punctuates manhunt for Kentucky fugitive.

WHITE HOUSE, Tenn. A Kentucky fugitive who has been on the run for five days amid a multi-state manhunt was spotted again late Wednesday but fled into a nearby cornfield after crashing his car.A rural Kentucky school district has canceled classes for a third straight day out of fear that a fugitive accused of shooting at law officers in two states might be lurking nearby.Kentucky State Police yesterday believed they had Cook barricaded alone in a home in the Hendricks Creek Marina area of Cumberland County, Ky., near Burkesville. Floyd Ray Cook, 62, of Lebanon, Ky., faces an attempted murder charge in connection to the Saturday shooting that took place during a traffic stop in Putnam County, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine said Monday.

The local superintendent, Kirk Biggerstaff, said he didn’t want students waiting for buses in sparsely populated neighborhoods that overlapped the search area. The fugitive who shot an Algood police officer Saturday night and then fled to Kentucky will be charged with attempted first-degree murder, authorities here said today.

Marshals investigated a vehicle Wednesday night, which lead to a short chase that ended with two people fleeing into the woods near mile marker 108 on Interstate 65, said Danny Shelton, spokesman for the Middle Tennessee U.S. Marshals, who joined the search earlier this week, received reports that Cook was spotted near White House, Tennessee, and they stopped a car at a gas station there, just off Interstate 65 north of Nashville, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. But he later described the situation as “fluid,” telling reporters officials believe a man and woman were in the car, and that authorities believe the man was either Cook or Wayne, but weren’t sure which.

On Saturday, officers with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department responded to an officer-involved shooting in which, authorities say, Cook shot Officer Ahscari Valencia. The manhunt comes nearly a year after police spent about seven weeks in search of Eric Frein, the survivalist accused of killing a Pennsylvania state trooper. Less than two hours later, a Kentucky State Police trooper recognized his truck and tried to stop him in rural Cumberland County, just inside the Kentucky state line. Cook was convicted of a series of crimes including rape, burglary, robbery, assault and riot in Kentucky in the 1970s and 1980s, according to state corrections department records.

In July, Cook was indicted on charges of first-degree trafficking in methamphetamine and tampering with physical evidence, according to Hardin County court records in Kentucky. Several months ago, the Marion County sheriff’s office, making routine checks on the sex offenders in the county, discovered he was no longer living there, said Sheriff Jimmy Clements.
