Hundreds displaced in New Jersey apartment building fire.

EDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — Hampered by winds and frigid temperatures, firefighters battled a huge fire Wednesday night at a New Jersey apartment complex that sent flames sky high and smoke visible from New York City across the Hudson River. As the fire continued to rage, hundreds who lived at the complex, including New York Yankees announcer John Sterling, wondered what would be left of their homes. ‘I was wondering what I was going to do for clothes,’ the announcer also said. ‘But then I started thinking about all the stuff, all the memories, whether it be music, books, and a lot of other stuff.

I went to my elevators [at the back of the building] and tried walking in, but the smoke was so intense I said to myself, “John, you better get the hell out of here.’ So I just drove away.”‘ Plumes of thick, black smoke issued from the blaze, and New York emergency officials advised residents in Manhattan and the Bronx that they might see or smell smoke. More than 14 years ago, a fire started at the same location where a five-story condominium complex was under construction and destroyed nine homes and damaged several others. It was on Ch. 7 in L.A.”), his partner Suzyn Waldman and plenty of others. “It’s simply amazing how many people found out about this fire,” Sterling said. “How many people were worried, how many called to see if you are doing OK and tell you they love you.” Sterling has always followed his own beat.

Authorities say it appears that everyone in the building was able to get out safely. There was also the fact that there was nothing he could really do. “You know, we can all relate to having our own safe existence, and what it could mean if that’s taken away,” Sterling said. “At least I know I’m safe tonight. And there will be that signature moment this spring when the ever-optimistic Sterling welcomes back Alex Rodriguez with the kind of salute only he can deliver. It was the same kind of optimism he displayed when the gritty, gutty Yankees of his pal Joe Torre were mounting so many comebacks during the glory years.
