Hurricane Fred forms in the Atlantic

Strengthening Tropical Storm Fred expected to become a hurricane overnight.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The sixth tropical storm of the 2015 season has developed over the far eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean and has steadily strengthened over the course of Sunday afternoon.Tropical Storm Fred continues to strengthen, National Hurricane Center forecasters said Sunday night, and was expected to become a hurricane overnight. As of the 8 p.m. advisory, the center of Fred is located about 115 miles east of Praia in the southernmost Cape Verde Islands with maximum sustained winds reaching 70 miles per hour with higher gusts. Fred is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph and it’s expected to continue to move in that general direction at a slightly slower forward speed over the next 48 hours.
