Jet lands safely in San Diego after being hit by laser beam.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — An American Airlines plane landed safely after it was hit with a laser beam on approach to San Diego International Airport, airline officials said Wednesday. Flight 563 from Phoenix, Arizona — carrying 168 passengers and six crew — was about five miles east of the Lindbergh Field airport when a green beam lit up the cockpit. “Upon approach into San Diego … the captain of American Airlines Flight 563 encountered a laser light in the cockpit,” airline spokesman Kent Powell said in a statement. “The crew declined medical attention and there are no reports of injuries from passengers.” It was the second laser reported locally in a month, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Lindbergh Field air traffic controls told San Diego police that the laser strike occurred four to five miles southeast of the airport, police Officer Dino Delimitros said. Law-enforcement officials are notified when an airplane crew radios in about a laser, but federal aviation officials have acknowledged that finding a suspect or suspects is difficult.
