Moderate 4.4 Earthquake Shakes Monterey County Early Tuesday.

GREENFIELD (KCBS) — A earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 struck along the San Andreas Fault near Greenfield in Monterey County on Tuesday, according to the U.S.

USGS researchers later found that oil and gas operators using a process known as waste water injection — a drilling procedure that disposes of water released during hydraulic fracturing — led to the 2011 quake. Deeper quakes are less noticeable while a shallow quake–in the 0 to 40 mile depth range–can feel much stronger than their actual reported magnitude.
