Two Massachusetts police officers fatally shot a man armed with a knife Monday before finding the man’s mother stabbed to death on the front steps of their home.A woman was found dead and a man was shot and killed by police early Monday morning outside a home in Weymouth, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey.According to authorities, a 911 call was received by the Weymouth Police Department at 1:04 a.m. reporting a need for assistance at a home on Prospect Hill Drive, which is perched on a quiet peninsula on the Fore River.WEYMOUTH (CBS) — Two people have died following an apparent homicide and police-involved shooting in Weymouth overnight, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office said.

Both officers decided simultaneously that deadly force was necessary and opened fire on Campbell, who was brought to South Shore Hospital and pronounced dead, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. Officers found a woman’s body on the steps of the residence with multiple stab wounds. “There is no such thing as a routine call. . . situations like this illustrate that,” said Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes at a press conference this morning.

The male was struck and incapacitated.” “While the cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, there was evidence of stabbing injury,” Traub said. Both of the officers involved in the shooting were transported to the hospital for evaluation, and have been put on administrative leave, following standard protocol, authorities said. “The two officers are very experienced — 10-plus years, for one of them and the other one has 10 years as well,” Morrissey said. “They are well respected, well trained officers — obviously a little shocked about what they found when they got to the scene. According to the Boston Herald, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh asked for privacy for his girlfriend, Lorrie Higgins, and her daughter, Lauren, whose father was Paul Campbell. “This is an extremely personal situation and I ask that Lorrie and Lauren’s privacy be respected at this time,” Walsh said in the statement. “This is an ongoing investigation and it is not my place to speculate on why or how this happened.

Mike Brennan, who lives on Hilltop Drive directly behind the Campbell home, said he stayed up late watching coverage of the Patriots’s AFC Champioinship victory and heard shots being fired. “She was a wonderful, neighborly lady,” Mary Brennan said. “She was private, but always pleasant. This is a very sad day for our neighborhood.” Peggy McLaughlin, who lives a few houses away from the Campbells, said she looked out her window early this morning and saw the flashing blue lights of police cruisers, but assumed it was a medical call. We get together and do things as a community and I see her at least a couple times a year,” she said. “Any time I’d be outside, she’d stop and we’d talk.

She frequently saw her son walking around the neighborhood wearing sweatpants and carrying a gym bag. “He seemed to have some financial struggles,” DeLuca said. “Saw him last week and he said he was going to move to California to get into acting. My focus right now is on my family, Lorrie and Lauren, and their well-being.” Neighbors even described Paul Campbell as “clean cut” according WBZ-TV, and even spoke about the small movie roles the man had in “The Fighter, and Ted.” Neighbors spoke fondly of the long-time community resident Patricia Campbell as well.
