Hundreds Displaced After Massive Fire Engulfs Edgewater Apartment Complex.

EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A local state of emergency has been declared after a massive fire engulfed a New Jersey apartment complex, displacing hundreds of residents. The fire broke out at The Avalon at Edgewater on the Hudson River, with flames reaching so high they could be seen from downtown New York City, Fox News reported. Embers spread, which ignited other small fires as well. “When I came here it was just smoke, but I came here around 5:30 and basically it wasn’t that much of a fire, but now it’s horrible,” says displaced resident Hamza Alkhayyat.

—Peter Weber House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has annoyed the White House by inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a vocal supporter of new sanctions (and worse) against Iran, to address a joint session of Congress about threats from Iran and radical Islam. As the fire continued to rage, hundreds who lived at the complex, including New York Yankees announcer John Sterling, wondered what would be left of their homes.

Well, according to Bloomberg’s Josh Rogin and Eli Lake, the Obama administration and U.S. intelligence community aren’t the only ones that opposes new sanctions during ongoing nuclear talks: So does the Mossad, Israel’s own intelligence service. Plumes of thick, black smoke issued from the blaze, and New York emergency officials advised residents in Manhattan and the Bronx that they might see or smell smoke. Residents were able to get out safely and there were no reports of injuries. “With a fire of this scope, to have no loss of life and so many people displaced, we actually feel thankful to all of the responding units from all over Bergen, Hudson and Union and even our friends in New York to give us a hand,” he said. “I walked to the building and smelled smoke, and I went out to my floor where my apartment is, and the smoke was so bad I couldn’t see, and I thought, ‘Hey, we’d better get out of here,’” Sterling said. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) that would ramp up sanctions against Iran if it doesn’t reach a deal with the U.S. and other world powers by a June 30 deadline. Mossad leaders have “broken ranks” with Netanyahu, Rogin and Lake report, and “have been briefing both Obama administration officials and visiting U.S. senators about their concerns on the Kirk-Menendez bill.” Their concern that sanction threats would sink the nuclear talks has caught the attention of lawmakers, including Menendez, who demanded clarification from Israel’s ambassador to the U.S.

The flames also destroyed a dozen surrounding homes, displacing up to 70 people. (TM and © Copyright 2015 CBS Radio Inc. and its relevant subsidiaries.
