Long Island weather: Friday begins sunny, mild weekend.

Temperatures will increase and wind gusts will weaken on Friday resulting in a lovely day, but not as nice as the weekend promises to be, according to the National Weather Service. “Happy Friday!

Around 7 a.m., temperatures in Greater Boston were in the low 50s, but that is expected to change when a new weather system arrives in the afternoon, sending temperatures into the 40s. “Blustery [Thursday] with a few isolated showers, especially north of the Mass Pike,’’ the weather service reported on its Facebook page. “Dry weather will prevail until mid next week.’’ Forecasters wrote around 7 a.m. that gusting winds could become a problem Thursday afternoon, although it was still possible conditions could change. “Portions of southern New England may see gusts between 35-45 mph this afternoon,’’ forecasters wrote on Facebook. Those conditions stick around for Saturday and Sunday; both days are expected to be dry, clear and mostly sunny, with daily highs in the 50s, the service’s Upton office said. Forecasters offered good news, at least for non-skiers, for the weekend. “It is looking like a 5 star weekend with mild temperatures in the mid to upper 50s!,’’ forecasters wrote.
