Neighbor Allegedly Kills 7-Year-Old Boy and Parents Before He is Fatally Shot by Police.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Records show the man suspected of killing three members of an Ohio family was investigated six years ago for threatening a mass shooting. Police say Landon Anderson and his parents, John and Christina Anderson, were shot and killed by 50-year-old Barry Kirk in their Columbus home, a Columbus Division of Police spokeswoman tells PEOPLE. “I don’t know if this was a home invasion, if he was let into the house, if they knew the suspect,” Columbus police Sgt. The Ohio State Highway Patrol records say Barry Kirk threatened the shooting after getting upset with an employee at the Ohio governor’s office in 2009. The records obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press say Kirk became angry because the employee couldn’t help him with an unemployment claim and threatened to make “a big boom” or begin shooting people.

The spokeswoman says that Kirk was a neighbor of the family and police are working to determine a motive along with the circumstances surrounding the murders. Those are “the questions that the investigator is going to be asking.” The suspect, Barry Kirk, 50, was shot by three officers Monday evening after a short chase outside a house on the city’s west side. Jeff Drown, who described himself to the AP as a friend of the Anderson family, said that John, 31, had just started a pavement sealing business and was always willing to help others. Kirk ran across the street from the Andersons’ home toward his own house before turning around and reaching for his waist, a witness told the Dispatch.

Kirk pleaded guilty to telephone harassment in 2009, faced assault and domestic violence charges that were later dismissed in 2004 and served eight months on vandalism charges in the 1980s, according to records.
