Man Accused Of Murdering Oakland Muralist Lashes Out At Arraignment.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The man charged with gunning down an artist as he worked on a mural in Oakland had to be forcibly removed from a courtroom Tuesday after he began shouting expletives at a judge reading a litany of charges against him. OAKLAND (CBS-SF) — A 20-year-old reputed Oakland gang associate swore and banged his head on a glass barrier Tuesday as he was arraigned on charges that he murdered mural artist Antonio Ramos in September and robbed five other people in separate incidents. Police say the 27-year-old from Emeryville was helping paint a street-side mural for a group that works to spread peace and stop violence when he was gunned down after an apparent argument.

Police officials described Holloway as a suspected serial robber who set off the deadly confrontation with Ramos, 27, by eyeing the painter’s camera equipment to steal. “F— that! Syren referred Holloway, who’s being held in custody without bail, to the Public Defender’s Office and ordered him to return to court on Monday to finalize his legal representation and possibly enter a plea to the six felony charges he faces. The most serious charge against Holloway, who has a prior conviction for second-degree robbery in August 2012, is the special circumstance of committing a robbery during a murder for fatally shooting Ramos in the 3500 block of West Street at about 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 29. Court officers quickly pounced on Holloway, struggling with him in the glass-enclosed courtroom dock and dragging him out a door, the San Francisco Chronicle reported (http://sfg.ly/1TdJQNJ). Holloway is known to hang around the same neighborhood of West Oakland where Ramos was killed and had been associated with members of a street gang, Lt.

The mural is part of the Oakland Super Heroes Mural Project, a collaboration between artists and local students organized by Art Esteem, the literacy and art arm of Attitudinal Healing Connection, a West Oakland group that seeks to stop violence by inspiring people with art and education. Holloway is also believed to be responsible for a string of robberies in the area, including one that occurred in Oakland just prior to Ramos being shot to death, Holmgren said.

Holmgren said that on the day of his death, Ramos had taken a break from painting and was snapping pictures of the mural he was working on when Holloway allegedly walked by and began eyeing some of his camera equipment, which police believe led to the altercation and shooting. However, the FBI cautions against such rankings saying, “these rough rankings provide no insight into the numerous variables that mold crime in a particular town, city, county, state, tribal area, or region,” and that “valid assessments are possible only with careful study and analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction.” A recent report by NeighborhoodScout ranking the top 100 dangerous cities in the US shows that high violent crime rates are less about city size but more about economic issues in many communities. Oakland police Officer Jimmy Ngo wrote in a probable cause statement that Holloway has admitted to police that he shot Ramos but claimed it was an accident.

The picture of violent crime in America in many people’s minds is of high rise public housing projects, but once we did the analysis, we realized that the picture of violent crime in America is different today with more of the most dangerous areas dominated by single family homes, abandoned homes, low-income areas in inner-ring suburbs or decaying cities. Marshals and FBI agents developed information that Holloway was staying with his mother in Stockton and arrested him there without incident last Friday. The number of violent crimes across the United States is estimated to have dropped by 0.2 per cent in 2014 from the year before, which had brought historic lows to many cities, according to data recently released by the FBI. One of the five robberies Holloway is accused of committing allegedly occurred on the same day that Ramos was shot and four allegedly occurred between Oct. 1 and 5.
