Obama declares California fire as major disaster.

U.S. MIDDLETOWN, CA – SEPTEMBER 15: Cables are tangled in every direction near a wreckage of a home destroyed by the Valley Fire wildfire on September 15, 2015 in Hidden Valley Lake, California.SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A pair of deadly wildfires in California have destroyed at least 1,700 homes and killed five residents, ranking among the most destructive fires in state history. A wildfire in Lake County, about 90 miles north of San Francisco, has killed three people since it started Sept. 12, and two men remain missing as of Tuesday.

Jerry Brown says he has requested that President Barack Obama declare a major disaster in the state after two wildfires killed five people, scorched more than 200 square miles and destroyed roughly 1,600 homes. Brown said in a statement Monday that a presidential major disaster declaration would provide funds to support fire victims and to supplement state and local disaster recovery efforts. All have been accounted for except the two men. “We are hopeful these people are located and returned and reunited with their loved ones,” he said. Several areas remained under an evacuation order more than a week after the fire’s start as crews continue to clear debris and trees and restore damaged power lines. Federal officials are still working on the request for the other fire, said Kelly Huston, deputy director for the governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

The presidential disaster declaration allows residents and business owners to apply for grants for repairs and temporary housing as well as apply for low-cost loans for uninsured property. Firefighters found a body inside a charred vehicle after the fire began Saturday, but investigators are looking at the man’s death as a possible suicide.
