Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Reported Inside Harbor-UCLA Hospital In Torrance.

A Los Angeles cop shot and killed a combative vandal wielding a metal chair when he reached for an officer’s gun during a hospital scuffle, authorities said. He wrote that some guy “went crazy” in the ER and after the Taser didn’t work, “they shot him.” Hours later when they believed he was calm, officers removed the handcuffs.

Ruben Jose Herrera, 26, of Torrance, died Saturday afternoon at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in suburban Los Angeles, the county coroner’s office said Sunday. He was brought to the hospital after he “viciously attacked” two officers outside an apartment building where police said he was throwing bottles. They said the suspect again became combative, including throwing objects (including a metal stool) at officers. “A witness stated that the suspect reached for one of the officer’s guns and at that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The events leading up to the deadly encounter began about 8 a.m. in the 1600 block of West 207th Street, where LAPD officials said residents called 911 to report a man throwing bottles at an apartment complex. A pair of officers assigned to watch over the suspect did not realize he would unleash another attack the moment they unhooked his handcuffs from the hospital bed.

He said relatives had gathered at the hospital Saturday after the initial incident that brought the man there, but left and couldn’t initially be located after the fatal shooting.
