Two killed in explosion in WWII tank at shooting range.

Deputies from Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office found two injured people at the scene and paramedics pronounced the pair dead after their lifesaving efforts failed.

The tank was positioned at the Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association (COSSA), a public gun range in Bend, Deschutes County, about 140 miles southeast of state capital Salem. “Those involved were handling an explosive when it blew up”, the Portland-based KOIN CBS affiliate cited Oregon State Police as saying. Paramedics attempted to save the two who were injured by the blast, according to Sergeant Nathan Garibay, but the injuries sustained were too great; they died on the scene. The gun range, which operates on 600 acres of land leased from the Bureau of Land Management, noted a high level of fire danger on its website Tuesday. “I know that there was an incident, but I can’t comment on anything because I don’t know what happened,” Bill Lewis, COSSA’s director at large, told the Oregonian.
