Edit A pig’s head was found outside a Philadelphia mosque in what is being called a ‘hate-motivated’ act.

U.S authorities are investigating an incident in which a pig’s head was thrown at a mosque in Philadelphia early on Monday morning, as worries grew over a rise in Islamophobia after a Muslim couple killed 14 people at a holiday party in California. PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police will step up patrols around worship sites as they look for the person who left a severed pig’s head outside a city mosque. The incident comes amid an apparent rise in anti-Muslim sentiment in the US, manifest both in attacks on places of worship and the campaign of Donald Trump, a Republican presidential ticket frontrunner.

Philadelphia Mayor-elect Jim Kenney decried what he called an act of bigotry. “We cannot allow hate to divide us now, in the face of unprecedented difficulties,” he said in a statement. The police department meanwhile hopes to enhance security video that shows someone throwing the animal’s head out the passenger door of a red pickup truck, Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Tuesday.

Marwan Kreidie, a caretaker at the mosque, told police he found the head near the door of the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society when he arrived around 6am Monday. Surveillance video showed a red truck driving past the Al-Aqsa mosque in North Philadelphia on Sunday night and someone throwing an object from the window, police said. Kreidie said the incident could be considered a ‘hate crime’, and blamed the recent rhetoric of Republican presidential candidates, such as Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the US.

Philadelphia police told The Washington Post that the object was thrown from the passenger side of the truck, and that the vehicle’s occupants are not visible in the video footage. Muslim rights advocacy group The Council on American-Islamic relations (CAIR) reported in July that the number of attacks on mosques had surpassed the total number for all of 2014. A worker opening the mosque – which is in the same building as an Islamic school and the Arab American Development Corp. – found the pig’s head around 6 a.m. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump also called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” in response to the attack.

American Muslims have expressed concern about an increase in Islamophobia since authorities said a young Muslim couple, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, stormed a party attended by San Bernardino County employees on December 2, leaving 14 people dead and 21 wounded. It happens a lot,” a woman told The Independent over the phone on condition of anonymity, because she had not received permission from Islamic Society officials to speak with the press. Last month, following deadly ISIS-backed attacks on Paris entertainment venues that left 130 dead, the mosque received a telephone message saying, “Are you happy about what happened in France?” “God is a pig!” “God is Pork!” police said. Nutter called Trump’s proposal “flat-out ignorant” and said, “If I had the power, the only banning that would be done is that I would ban him from Philadelphia.

We don’t have any room for that kind of stupidity here.” On Monday, Trump proposed stopping Muslims from coming to America “until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses.” His suggested ban was quickly condemned by other presidential candidates from both parties. Indeed, many Muslims in America report feeling or experiencing growing anti-Muslim sentiment, particularly since the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino. The suspect said it was a prank, but the incident rattled the Lewiston Somali community. “A lot of people think it’s kryptonite to Muslims and it’s not,” said Kreidie, the Philadelphia mosque spokesman. “It’s just degrading and humiliating to people, and you know why it’s being done.”
