Planned Parenthood doctor appears to admit to partial-birth abortions

As if nation needs another show trial.

A Planned Parenthood doctor laughs as she says she continues to “strive” to deliver an aborted baby with an intact skull and appears to admit participating in partial-birth abortions in the latest undercover video released Tuesday targeting Planned Parenthood. The Center for Medical Progress, a pro-life, medical ethics group, has released the eleventh video in its ongoing undercover and investigative series purporting to show that Planned Parenthood has sold fetal body parts and performed illegal partial-birth abortions. On the heels of the political farce that is the House Select Committee on Benghazi, outgoing Speaker John Boehner has begun casting the cringe-worthy sequel, a House select “investigative” panel on Planned Parenthood.

Amna Dermish, an abortionist for Planned Parenthood in Austin, Texas, explains in the video that she will sometimes use ultrasound guidance to position the baby to come out feet first, or what’s called “breech presentation,” in order to keep more of the child’s organs intact for prospective buyers.

In Texas, Planned Parenthood recently was banned from receiving Medicaid funds from the state because of the serial health and legal violations revealed by CMP’s undercover videos. But as in Benghazi, the House Republicans’ zeal to beat a political hobby horse into submission only underscores the disconnect between the far right and the rest of the country. The state’s three Planned Parenthood affiliates were originally required to produce ‘thousands’ of documents including patient records, physician and nurses’ notes, test results and detailed employee information within 24 hours, but have since been granted a one-week extension.

She doesn’t say if she uses another chemical during the more than eight-minute, edited clip, and CMP asserts that means babies are delivered alive and killed outside of the womb. I don’t usually do it in the 16 to 18 weeks,” she said. “With a further gestation I will sometimes do that if it’s a cephalic presentation [head first], just because it’s easier to get.” Dermish later said that she hasn’t yet been able to get an intact calvarium, or head, though she laughed that it is “something to strive for,” based on what’s presented in the heavily edited footage. If, in the process of reviewing the documents, Bowen’s office is able to substantiate the whistleblower’s claims, the next step could be to open a criminal investigation. Federal law states that “no alteration of the timing, method, or procedures used to terminate the pregnancy was made solely for the purpose of obtaining the tissue.” Yet both Nucatola and Dermish described using ultrasound guidance and putting the baby in breech for the express purpose of obtaining more valuable organs from the child. The inspector general’s notice to Planned Parenthood states that the organization’s practice of altering the standard of care to procure fetal tissue “violate[s] accepted medical standards, as reflected in federal law” and is therefore a “Medicaid program violation[] that justif[ies] termination.” As The Federalist‘s Mollie Hemingway detailed, Planned Parenthood’s own customers have criticized the unsanitary conditions and low standards of care provided by Planned Parenthood.

The doctor went on to discuss how gestational age impacts how she prepares for the abortion procedure, noting that her aim is “usually to get the specimens out … more intact.” “An abortion in which the person performing the abortion: (1) deliberately and intentionally vaginally delivers a living fetus until, in the case of a head-first presentation, the entire fetal head is outside the mother’s body, or, in the case of a breech presentation, any part of the fetal trunk past the navel is outside the mother’s body; and (2) performs the overt act, other than completion of delivery, that kills the partially delivered living fetus.” Dr. Her suit accused Planned Parenthood of submitting claims to be reimbursed for condoms, spermicide, counseling, blood and urine tests, and tests for HIV and STDs that were either never dispensed or were considered “medically unnecessary or unneeded.” She, joined with the Texas attorney general’s office and U.S. No woman, especially one who purports to care about female empowerment, should endorse an organization like Planned Parenthood that treats women as revenue units to be exploited instead of treating them like people who deserve quality health care.

Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s senior director of medical services. “So then you’re just kind of cognizant of where you put your graspers, you try to intentionally go above and below the thorax, so that, you know, we’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m going to basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact. Either way, given Lena Dunham’s staunch support for an organization that targets hundreds of thousands of young lives for extermination each year, trick-or-treaters would be well-advised to skip her house this year. Johnson appealed to the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld the lower court’s dismissal in June 2014 and required her to pay for Planned Parenthood’s legal fees incurred during the appeal. Earlier this month, Planned Parenthood announced it would stop taking money from researchers for aborted baby parts. “These extremists show a total lack of compassion and dignity for women’s most personal medical decisions,” an Aug. 4 statement from Planned Parenthood said. The videos have spurred investigations of Planned Parenthood’s policies on aborted fetuses by several Republican-led congressional committees and numerous states.

Carroll said Planned Parenthood incorrectly coded the visits to collect Medicaid reimbursements, estimating the clinic received about $200 per student. “Thousands of claims were filed” in the ten year span, according to Carroll’s original complaint. Adam Schiff and Linda Sanchez countered the right-wing narrative in the Benghazi committee, and restored a modicum of Congress’ lost credibility as a watchdog. But conservatives should think twice about continuing this tactic; should Democrats retake Congress, it would not be hard to imagine similar “investigations” into, say, the National Rifle Association.
