Officer killed in South Carolina, a ‘special human being’.

Just before 8 a.m., two officers responded to a report of a suspicious person parked in a van outside Richland Mall in Forest Acres. A South Carolina police officer was fatally shot at a mall on Wednesday during a struggle with a knife-wielding gunman, a law enforcement official said.

Forest Acres Police Officer Greg Alia confronted an individual at the mall, leading to a struggle that resulted in Alia being fatally shot, according to the Associated Press. “Our hearts are broken,” Police Chief Gene Sealy told reporters at a news conference, according to CBS News affiliate WLTX. “Forest Acres is a small community, small police department. He is expected to be charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, said Lieutenant Curtis Wilson, a spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. He was a calming influence on everybody.” It is unclear what Hall was doing in the mall parking lot, but he already had two run-ins with the law this month. One charge was for refusal to stop on police command and another charge for unlawfully carrying a weapon, resulting in a $1,120 fine instead of jail time, according to WISTV.

It was set up by Patrick Walsh of Ruston, Louisiana, who said he and Alia were both members of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity at the University of South Carolina.
