Councilman: Baby-Snatching May Have Been Behind Deadly Bronx Stabbing.

A deranged woman slit the throat of an expectant mother Friday afternoon in The Bronx before cutting the baby out of her body in a sick attempt to pass the child off as her own, police sources said. Inside a two-family home nearby, her 22-year-old mother lay on the floor in a pool of blood, fatally stabbed several times in her torso and neck, the authorities said. Ashley Wade, 22, allegedly slashed mom-to-be Angelikque Sutton, also 22, across the neck inside Wade’s apartment on Monticello Avenue in Wakefield around 2:20 p.m., sources said. As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported, the attack happened around 2:30 p.m. on the first floor of a house at 4450 Monticello Ave., at East 241st Street, in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.

Due to severe trauma to the dead woman’s body, police could not determine whether she was pregnant and were awaiting results from the New York City Medical Examiner’s office, sources told CBS2. Another woman was handcuffed across the street, screaming that she was the baby’s mother, according to a city official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

For hours on Friday night, investigators were trying to rule out that woman’s claim, taking blood samples to determine with certainty who had given birth in the middle of a bloody scene. Police were awaiting a search warrant to examine the suspect’s body and determine if she had the baby, sources said. “I seen when they were wheeling her out and they had the blanket over her,” said neighbor Diana Rivera. “And when they wheeled her inside the ambulance, that’s when he started giving her CPR.” “We was out here for a while before the ambulance took the lady out of the home, and then they had another lady handcuffed, and then afterwards, they put her in an ambulance and they went off,” said neighbor Vivette Williams. The suspect’s boyfriend was also being questioned by the police, Councilman King added, though it was not clear whether he was there when the stabbing occurred. A woman who lived next door to the pregnant woman and gave her name only as Michelle said she saw two women emerge from the home on Friday night: one in handcuffs, and the other covered in a white sheet.
