Harry Reid to have eye surgery Monday.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid’s office says he will undergo surgery on his right eye next week following an injury sustained in an exercise accident on New Year’s Day. The surgery is scheduled for Jan. 26 at George Washington University Hospital and Reid will work from his Washington home for the rest of the week to minimize strain on his eye, spokeswoman Kristen Orthman said in a statement on Wednesday. The arrangement, which prevailed while Reid was outer earlier this month, has observers watching for any jockeying between Durbin and Schumer, long seen as rivals to succeed Reid as Democratic leader.

That meant Reid — who lost his majority leader post to Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky — missed the swearing in of 13 newly elected senators, all save one of them Republicans. I’ll continue to fight back,” Reid said. “I’m in the process of setting up for the next go-around.” Reid was not in the Senate on Wednesday but is expected back on Thursday.
