Fortnite community divided over “OP” Ballistic Shield in Chapter 5 Season 1

The Ballistic Shield was added to Fortnite in Chapter 5 Season 1. Ever since its inception, players have been divided over its efficiency in the game.

Over the years, Epic Games has introduced a lot of weapons and other utility items in the game. These items can help players win matches without much difficulty, provided they’re used in a proper manner. The Ballistic Shield is one such item.

The item is useful, yes, because it can block incoming damage. Some players have claimed that the item makes you invulnerable, whereas others have claimed that the item can be broken in two shots.

Overall, there’s a constant debate about the Ballistic Shield in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1. Many players have taken to Reddit to share their opinions about the same.

A player named u/ItsThatGoatBoy posted a clip on Reddit where they were seen raining bullets on an enemy with the Ballistic Shield. However, to their disappointment, the enemy eliminated them with ease. The following caption accompanied the post, “To those saying ‘just pick up an AR to deal with the Ballistic Shield!’, I had this man dead to rights, 30 HP remaining and he whips out the ‘NUH UH’ (shield) and completely ignores a total of 435 damage.”

Several players weighed in on their opinion about the same. Many agreed with the player and stated that the shield was actually “OP”. Others said that their shields were broken twice only. They went on to wonder if that’s how the Ballistic Shield was intended to function in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1.

There was another side of the community that felt that the item wasn’t exactly broken in the game, especially in squads. Since there’s a lot of flanking involved in such game modes, the Ballistic Shield doesn’t exactly make one invulnerable. It’s only good in case of face-to-face encounters.

That aside, a few players took to the comments to point out that the player chose the wrong method to engage the shield to begin with. Rather than damaging it with the grapple blade and then shooting at it with the AR, they should have ideally started with the AR and then finished off the enemy with the grapple blade.

Either way, the debate surrounding the Ballistic Shield in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1 still stands valid. For context, the shield has 255 hit points, which is 5 more than what you have including both your shields. In our opinion, an item that literally doubles your total hit points is definitely broken to a certain extent. But then again, the fact that it’s restricted to face-to-face encounters only does leave quite a bit up for debate.
