D.C. area forecast: Wintry mix and rain tonight into Saturday; Sunday night snow potential grows.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cities in the Northeast prepared Friday for a messy mix of rain, snow and sleet that is bearing down on the area this weekend in what forecasters are calling the Interstate 95 corridor’s first brush with a significant winter storm this season. The large cities along the East Coast, including New York, will get a slushy mix of precipitation from a fast-moving storm that will bring heavier snow and ice into interior locations from the mountains of Virginia to New England. The National Weather Service said the exact track of the storm was unclear, but some areas could expect up to 8 inches or more of snow, and even those that don’t get much may experience dangerous road conditions.

She said the storm’s impact will be felt especially in the morning. “There will be a lot of that accumulation then, and then rain will come and wash it all away,” Meola said Thursday. North and west of D.C. faces the likely highest impact from any wintry weather tonight into tomorrow, while the Sunday night system could be a region-wide affair. The heaviest precipitation tries to hold off until after the bulk of the evening commute is over, though don’t be surprised to see light stuff (snow or a mix to start, changing rainier) falling as early as 5 p.m. or so. He said snowfall totals were expected to be around 1 to 2 inches across eastern Long Island but higher to the west, with the city getting 2 to 5 inches.

There is at least some risk of a heavier burst of precipitation coming in by mid-evening, and if it does, it would be in the form of snow across much of the area. Confidence: Medium Tonight: Rain or a sleet/rain mix wants to be the predominant story, but we do need to watch for the risk of an evening snow burst. Even if that happens, temperatures might be marginal close in to the city at least, and we’d still change to rain and/or sleet by midnight most spots. If you’re well north or west, a wintry mix including snow, sleet and freezing rain may persist for a good chunk of the night resulting in some accumulation. Confidence: Low-Medium Tomorrow (Saturday): The heaviest activity may be out of here by sunrise or shortly thereafter, but a showery regime could last into midday or so.

Confidence: Low Behind our storm system on Tuesday, we should be able to see a good deal of sunshine, with only periodic patches of cloudiness popping up at times.
