Authorities: Spirit Airlines flight returns to Florida airport after possible threat.

Spirit Airlines Flight 596 from Fort Lauderdale to Minneapolis was only in the air for 15 minutes before it had to return to the gate due to a security issue, the airline said in a statement.Fort Lauderdale officials say a person on board the flight made the threat, according to local CBS 12. “No apparent threat” has been detected, and no bomb was found aboard the aircraft. The airplane landed in “a secure area” around 11:05 p.m. where Fire Rescue was standing by, according to tweets from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the plane landed safely and was taken to a secure area to be checked out by the bomb squad, but no actual threat was detected.

This interruption in the flight’s departure came after a witness reported alleged “suspicious activity” to the flight crew, according to Maryland Transportation Authority police. The next day, the Council on American Islamic Relations asked Spirit Airlines to apologize for removing the four, saying the suspicious activity that led to the passengers’ removal “was a man who appears to be of Middle Eastern descent watching a news clip on his cell phone.”
