Teen sweethearts held for crime spree.

Two teenage sweethearts suspected in a crime spree of stolen vehicles and pilfered cheques around the south east of America have been caught in Florida. Dalton Hayes, an 18-year-old suspected of committing a string of crimes with his 13-year-old girlfriend, agreed during a quick Monday morning court hearing to return to his home state of Kentucky to face charges.

Hayes and his girlfriend Cheyenne Phillips were arrested early on Sunday in Panama City Beach by the US marshal’s service and local police after being found sleeping in a stolen vehicle. The couple allegedly began their run from the law and their families earlier this month when they vanished from their small hometown in western Kentucky. Hayes and Phillips stole three pickup trucks during the spree — the last two, a 2006 Toyota Tacoma and then a 2001 Toyota Tundra, had guns inside, police said.

It’s not clear exactly how many charges they will face, but police in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia jack and Kentucky are all weighing possible counts. Phillips’ charges will be handled in juvenile court, police said. “I want people to know that (Hayes and Phillips) are not violent individuals,” Martin said. “They did steal vehicles, but they would never actually physically harm anyone. The girl “would go in and write checks, and she would come out with cigarettes and stuff, so I didn’t have any reason not to believe she wasn’t 19”, Martin said.

He faces burglary and theft charges in his home county, stemming from an arrest late last year, according to court records in Grayson County, Kentucky.
