TAMPA — One person pulled over in a stolen SUV was critically wounded by police gunfire early Monday morning and three more people were taken into custody after a Tampa police officer and police dog were attacked following a chase of a stolen vehicle, authorities said. A suspect in the theft of an SUV has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a Monday morning chase with Tampa Police ended in gunshots.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the incident began to unfold around 2:30 a.m. when a police officer spotted a SUV that had been reported stolen. The incident started about 2:30 a.m., according to Tampa police, when an officer began following a stolen sport utility vehicle near N Nebraska Avenue and E Lake Avenue. The helicopter was equipped with an infrared device that tracks people by body heat, and the crew was able to track the four suspects as they fled into the swamp near the church. Hegarty said it did not initially appear that the suspects had fired any weapons. “As far as I’m aware those were just the shots fired by the officer,” he said.
