Delaware family demands answers after police shoot wheelchair-bound man.

Delaware police officers fatally shot an armed man in a wheelchair after responding to a call that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities say.Video that claims to have been taken at the scene, posted on YouTube by the channel Photography Is Not a Crime but later removed, showed an officer with his gun drawn. They are conducting a thorough investigation and tell us they are still in very preliminary stages of this police involved shooting. ‘The Delaware Department of Justice’s Office of Civil Rights and Public Trust is investigating the officer-involved shooting on Wednesday in Wilmington and will determine whether the police officers acted in compliance with Delaware law. The man was identified as 28-year-old Jeremy “Bam” McDowell, according to Robert Bovell, a community activist and former candidate for mayor who knows the family.

A bouquet of flowers was placed in the area where McDowell was shot and some gray powder was on the concrete, apparently to soak up bloodstains on the street. As The Christian Science Monitor previously reported, about 12 percent of the nation’s 18,000 law enforcement agencies employ some form of crisis intervention training to help officers respond compassionately to those afflicted by mental illness, but ultimately, training can only go so far.
