The trouble with Bratton’s ‘iron pipeline’ gun complaint

Funeral of slain New York City officer draws thousands.

‘Insanity” is the word New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton uses for the US Congress. The officers lined rain-swept streets for blocks on Wednesday outside a Queens church where mourners gathered to pay tribute to officer Randolph Holder. As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, the officers came by the thousands as they showed somber faces in their dress uniforms – coming from everywhere from East Hartford, Connecticut to Brea, California. The mayor spoke of how Holder came to the United States 12 years ago with a dream of becoming a police officer – like his father and grandfather had in Guyana – and “make the world better.” Holder, 33, “served as a peace officer in the truest sense of the word,” the mayor said. “He loved to be in the community.

Choking up as he addressed the dead officer, Bratton told Holder that he was now relieved of his duty, adding, “We send you on your new assignment — to be a guardian angel at the gates of heaven.’’ Bratton told the mourners, “What makes a police officer? Holder, a five-year veteran from Guyana, was killed 20 October while responding to a report of shots fired and a bicycle stolen at gunpoint in Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood. The Rev Al Sharpton, a prominent civil rights leader and critic of police treatment of minorities, on Tuesday canceled plans to be the eulogist at Holder’s funeral, saying he was concerned that his presence would be more divisive than unifying.

There was loud applause when he left the podium to give the badge to the father. “To simply wear the uniform of an officer is an act of courage,” she said. “You haven chosen to be both target and hero. Keeping people safe is what brought Randy to the job.” “I came back in January for Officer (Wenjian) Liu,” Carpenter said. “(It’s) not something any of us want to do, but there’s nothing more important than to be here and support our brothers.” “Thirty-three years old — certainly had a lot left to offer the community and the City of New York, and my heart goes out to him, and his family and to the entire the New York City Police Department,” said New Jersey State police Lt. That’s why only seven states have both laws giving the government full discretion over who gets a permit to carry a pistol and a record of denying such permits even to law-abiding citizens.

Advocates for the diversion program, which offers treatment as an alternative to incarceration for drug addicts, have warned against making major policy changes based on one incident. Unless he has the money to go through a long process to prove a need — and that’s impossible for most to do — city residents will be turned down for a carry permit. But less choose to be heroes.’’ His accused killer, Tyrone Howard, was out on the streets after being given rehab instead of jail time for a drug bust after more than two dozen previous arrests. Mayor Nir Barkat, who has a gun license, was himself filmed carrying his Glock 23. “Every time there is tension,” the Times of Israel quoted him as saying, “I instruct people who are allowed to carry weapons and are experienced in using them to carry their guns with them.” In New York, they’d all be arrested.
