Animal House! University of Michigan fraternity apologizes for causing $50K worth of damage to ski resort.

Treetops Resort near Gaylord, Mich. suffered $50,000 in damages to walls, ceilings, windows, furniture and carpeting when 120 fraternity and sorority members ran amok last weekend, the Detroit Free Press reports. A fraternity that belongs to the University of Michigan have been forced to apologize to a ski resort after running amock last weekend and causing $50,000 worth of damage to the facility while doing so. The fraternity could face criminal charges, but in the mean time, the university is investigating wrongdoing and chapter president Joshua Kaplan has said they will be “working with the management of the resort to pay for all damages and cleaning costs.” University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald says members of several other fraternities and sororities were involved with damage at Treetops and at Boyne Highlands near Harbor Springs. Members of Sigma Alpha Mu allegedly broke windows, smashed light fixtures, damaged furniture and threw food and beer bottles around the Treetops Resort in Dover Township, Mich., while partying there over the weekend.

Mr Owens said he has a meeting set up with University officials to discuss what happened at his resort, and pending the outcome of that meeting might pursue criminal action. He blames excessive drinking and calls it “an affront” to thousands of “respectful, hard-working students.” “This is not the behavior we expect of our students, regardless of where they may be or what they may be doing,” Fitzgerald told WWJ’s Beth Fisher Wednesday. “Our expectation is that these organizations and the individuals will certainly be held accountable for their actions.” TM and © Copyright 2015 CBS Radio Inc. and its relevant subsidiaries.

Michigan State Police had to come to the resort and remove the unruly students on Sunday after other guests complained about them, The Detroit News reports. They were also “very disruptive to additional guests,” general manager Barry Owens said, adding that they eventually had to call the police to dislodge the raucous frat boys. Thousands of dollars worth of additional damage also hit nearby Boyne Highlands Resort, 9&10 News reported, where two additional frats allegedly ripped up 12 rooms. In a separate incident, members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity; Alpha Phi sorority, Chi Psi fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority damaged condominiums at another resort.
