Costco Shopper Punches 78-Year-Old Man Over Nutella Waffle Sample.

A Burbank man was charged Tuesday with punching a 78-year-old Costco shopper who confronted him about taking too many Nutella waffles from a sample cart, authorities said. BURBANK, Calif. – A 24-year-old man has been charged with elder abuse after authorities say he punched a 78-year-old man over free Nutella waffle samples at a Los Angeles-area Costco store. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office says he was hoarding samples of the waffles at the Burbank Costco on Sunday morning when the 78-year-old told him to take just one.

Derrick Gharabighi of Burbank is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of felony elder abuse and personal infliction of great bodily injury against a person over 70, Burbank police spokesman Sgt. He told officers he was reaching for a Nutella waffle sample when another man – later identified as Gharabighi — took several samples off the table. This didn’t sit well with Gharabighi, who allegedly responded by punching the older man just above his left eye, resulting in a 1-inch gash and enough swelling that the man required hospitalization.
