Wanted teen agrees to return to home state of Kentucky.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — The drama surrounding two teenage sweethearts on the run from the law ended quietly and unceremoniously in a Florida beach town.

Dalton Hayes, an 18-year-old suspected of committing a string of crimes with his 13-year-old girlfriend, agreed during a quick Monday morning court hearing to return to his home state of Kentucky to face charges. Hayes called his mom from jail in Panama City Beach and told her “he was sorry and he loves me and he’s ready to come face the consequences,” Martin said. Hayes and Phillips stole three pickup trucks during the spree — the last two, a 2006 Toyota Tacoma and then a 2001 Toyota Tundra, had guns inside, police said. It’s not clear exactly how many charges they will face, but police in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia jack and Kentucky are all weighing possible counts.

Phillips’ charges will be handled in juvenile court, police said. “I want people to know that (Hayes and Phillips) are not violent individuals,” Martin said. “They did steal vehicles, but they would never actually physically harm anyone. The girl “would go in and write checks, and she would come out with cigarettes and stuff, so I didn’t have any reason not to believe she wasn’t 19,” Martin said. He faces burglary and theft charges in his home county, stemming from an arrest late last year, according to court records in Grayson County, Kentucky.
