The Good Samaritans who helped 25-year-old Brittany Leith exit her overturned car early Sunday morning begged the single mom not to cross a New York parkway alone to get her purse. Passers by who saw the wreckage stopped to help her as she emerged from the vehicle, but that’s when she told them she had to rush back to the car to get something.New York woman Brittany Leith climbed out from under her vehicle on the southern State Parkway on Long Island about 3.54am on Sunday and made it to the shoulder of the roadway with the help of other motorists, state police said.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Anna Leith, Brittany’s distraught grandmother, said: “She has a three-year-old daughter […] who doesn’t have a mother anymore. But before cops arrived, she returned to her vehicle in the left lane to retrieve property from it when she was hit and killed by another passing motorist.

A police officer who was inside the rammed cruiser was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Islip, but officials did not release any additional information on the injured cop’s condition. The vehicle of a state trooper who arrived at the accident scene was subsequently hit by a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder as the trooper was attempting to exit his car. Her grandmother told Newsday she will find it difficult to break the news to Leith’s 3-year-old daughter. “We have to tell this little baby, this little doll,” Claire Hansen said. “How do we tell this little girl? . . .
