Good Samaritan helping at rescue scene dies after falling from bridge.

Jessica Nicole Smith fell about 23 feet just before 2 a.m. after she heard a man crying for help under the Greenville County bridge and decided to try to crawl down and reach him, officials said. Relatives said Sunday they were “heartbroken and empty” after a South Carolina woman who stopped to help at a crash scene fell off a bridge to her death.

They say 29 year old Jessica Smith got out of her vehicle she was riding in on I-385 at Highway 276 around 1:45 Saturday morning to help someone hurt in an accident before first responders arrived. The 29-year-old mom and certified nursing assistant’s friends and family said Smith died exactly how she lived — on a constant quest to help others. “If anybody ever needed help, Jessica was always there. Cops said that Smith had initially checked among the wrecked vehicle for anyone who had been injured, but after failing to find anyone called out over the edge of the bridge.

She was the one that wanted me to pull over to see if he was okay,” said Jessica’s Cousin, Justin Michael Adams, who was also at the scene of the accident. “She had a heart of gold. She added: ‘He’s going to be OK, because I’m going to make sure of that, but it’s going to be tough growing up from the age of nine without your mom.

Her very last few moments, after being happy for a few hours, she was saving somebody else’s life,” said Adams. “So I’m glad I, if anybody was able to see and be there for her the whole time. ” He and 22-year-old Tevin, who lives at Flatbush Gardens, along with another good Samaritan, formed a safety chain, passing the victims down the fire escape.
