Kitty Releases Poignant New Single “Tread Water”
Dublin-born, London-raised singer-songwriter Kitty recently released her new single, “Tread Water,” a track from her forthcoming EP, Swimming for Dummies.
Kitty explains, “‘Tread Water’ is about a breakdown in communication I was having with my girlfriend in our relationship. The chorus is a desperate plea for us to have a sincere conversation about our feelings so that we could move on from the conflict we were having, instead of letting it push us further away to our opposite corners of London. My producer, Jules Konieczny, and I drew inspiration from the juxtaposition of the sparkling but moody visuals of the TV series ‘Euphoria.’”
A graduate of the acclaimed BRIT school, Kitty has homed in on her storytelling talent, finding the magic in the mundane. Her song “4 Days and 4 Nights” was featured on BBC Introducing London and featured on Spotify’s Spanish Viral Top 50 Playlist upon its release.
She spent the past few years creating her unique sound. Lyrically she expresses the development that comes with growing up and how navigating the unknown of adulthood is akin to learning to swim with no instructions. Kitty worked with producer SWO (previously producing Tom Grennan and Everything Everything) on her upcoming EP to bring her fresh sound to life.
Autobiographical and deliciously introspective, “Tread Water” opens on a low-slung, evocative piano topped by Kitty’s sumptuous vocals, ranging from soft and breathy to delicately translucent, dripping with haunting nuances and eloquent phrasing. Fluid tonal alterations imbue the lyrics with exquisite surfaces of emotional authenticity.
“Can we just talk it out / I know it’s scary to face your feelings / But if we don’t do it now … it will keep building / And we’ll both go down.”
With hints of soul, pop, and R&B, Kitty’s “Tread Water” chronicles the daunting feelings of confronting and resolving the complications of relationships.
